BOOTLEG!!

.In the spirit that if you want something done RIGHT, y'a.... well, you know.... do it yourself, the Original Ol' Boy Band has produced its OWN bootleg album...

The Hip Boots is a collection of nearly two dozen cuts from various drop-in points during the 30-year-plus history of The 1937 Flood, a band has its roots in the foggy (some more foggy than others) years of The Hippy Culture.

In the fine tradition of bootlegs, the recording quality isn't always the greats -- these cuts were made on the fly at coffeehouses and parties, clubs and concerts and in people's living rooms, with whatever material were available -- but the recordings do capture some of the spirit and madness that brought the Flood together.

These cuts also give the current Flood a chance to give a huge shoutout to earlier Floodsters, like Rog Samples, Chuck Romine, Stewart Schneider, Bill Hoke and others. They'll all still with us in the flow. We also feature some of the beautiful ladies who drop in from time to time, like Michelle Walker and Kathy Castner.

MORE INFO? HERE ARE THE CUTS....

1. Samson and Delilah. Recorded at a party in the spring of 1979, this Rev. Gary Davis tune features Charlie’s vocals, Dave’s supporting comments and a to-die-for guitar solo by Rog Samples.

2. Gospel. At the same party, Brother Peyton then steps up for the lead vocals on this grand old Goose Creek Symphony number.

3. Mama Don’t ‘Low. Here the boys are having a grand time with a traditional solo-trading tune, with with rides by Joe Dobbs, Rog, Bill Hoke on bass, Randy Jack Nuckols on spoons and Stewart Schneider on harmonica. And listen when the guys hand it back to Jack for more spoons – that’s Rog playing a “body” duet with him.

4. Peaceful Easy Feeling. In the oldest piece this collection (1974), Rog sings this classic Eagles tune, accompanied by Dave on Autoharp and – listen closely – Bill Hoke on dobro.

5. June Apple. Dave and Joe are front and center on this 1981 rendering of a traditional fiddle tune.

6. Blow Up Your TV. John Prine has always been a favorite songwriter for the Flood. Here, recorded on stage at the Dogwood Festival in Huntington in 1980, are Rog and Dave doing one of his best.

7. Black Eyed Blues. Here’s an old Ma Rainey blues recorded late one night at a party the same weekend.

8. When She Wants Good Lovin’. On this old Coasters tune, Charlie sings lead and Rog sings that sweet, tight harmony.

9. Unchained Melody. Nothing’s sacred to these guys. Dave, Rog and Charlie have their way with what used to be a love song. Think Spike Jones

10. Spoon River. Recorded on the very first installment of Joe’s “Music from the Mountains” show on West Virginia Public Radio, this is a favorite Michael Smith song they guys learned in the early 1980s.

11. I Got Mine. A great jug band number the boys learned from the recordings of Jim Kweskin.

12. Whiskey Before Breakfast. Recorded live on stage at Harris Riverfront Park in Huntington, WV, when the band was invited to perform with the Huntington Symphony Orchestra, Joe leads the way on this rollicking fiddle tune

13. Bill Bailey. Chuck Romine sings the lead and hands off the solos in this tradition al Dixieland number recorded live at Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky.

14. Lovin’ Arms. The beautiful Kathy Castner joins the boys for a nice little studio recording of an old Doby Gray number.

15. Way Downtown. Here’s another live recording from Morehead, a reworking of a great old bluegrass tune, featuring everyone on stage.

16. Honeysuckle Rose. Recorded live on Joe’s “Music from the Mountains” radio show in 2006, The Chick Singer, Michelle Walker, wails a Fats Waller classic.

17. Banks of the Ohio. Dave takes the vocal lead on this outtake from the recording session for the Flood’s first CD in 2001.

18. Jelly Roll Blues. Learned from a wonderful Tom Rush album from back in the day, the boys picked up this tune, just on the spur of the moment, at a radio show session.

19. Since I Fell for You. Playing mandolin, Doug Chaffin accompanies Michelle on the Flood’s reworking of Lenny Welch’s 1963 classic. The song, by Buddy Johnson, dates back to 1948. It was recorded here at a 2006 Footmad concert at the W.Va. Cultural Center in Charleston.

20. St. Anne’s Reel. At the same concert, Joe gave the fellows a workout on his spirited rendition of this traditional fiddle tune.

21. Rag Mama. The Flood made a bit of musical history on this tune, playing its duet with the Huntington Symphony Orchestra. Invited to participate in the orchestra’s “Picnic with the Pops” series in the summer of 2002, the boys provided the symphony members with kazoos and invited them play as a kazooified chorus on a couple of verses. We let them keep the kazoos.

22. I Never Cried. Playing at Huntington’s Renaissance Arts Center in the winter of 2003, the guys reflect on that summer night before they launch into a favorite 12-bar blues that featured everyone in the band.
