WONDERS OF THE WASHBOARD

Long-time Floodsters may remember Wallace the Washboard. In one of The Flood's many late-1970s/early '80s configurations, Wallace was a regular. It started when Dave Peyton showed up at a jam session with a washboard to play a raucious rhythm behind some of the band's rowdier numbers.

Washboardery really caught on for a while there with the guys, and Wallace became a fixture for a season or two, until the old boy literally fell apart from too many good times. Who can't relate to that?

Everybody thought The Flood's flirtation with washboarding was a thing of the past, until recently when Dr. Jazz Chuck Romine started playing his banjo on the Hoagy Carmichael standard,"Coney Island Washboard Rondelet." What better excuse for re-exploring the band's washboardability?

Business manager Pamela found a company in Columbus, Ohio, that sells specially constructed musical washboards (hey, that's another story) and guys presented it to Dave for his blessing.

But new and improved is Wallace II. Zoey, the Flood's staff artist and principal dancer, did some graphics to make this instrument a Flood original. Here are samples of Zoey's magic!
